How To Design A Wind Turbines And What Are Its Advantages

Author: Walijne Bellen

Wind Turbines are machines which rotate and convert kinetic energy into mechanical or electrical energy. Wind Turbines produce clean and renewable energy resource which does not deplete like oil, gas and coal based power plants.

How to Design a Wind Turbine

1. Measure the Wind Energy available in your target area by measuring the Wind Power Density (WPD) which is the mean of annual power available per square meter of the swept area of the turbine.

2. Do Aerodynamic modeling to decide the tower height.

3. Decide the Control Systems to be used in the wind turbine.

4. Decide the number of blades based on your aerodynamic model.

5. Decide the type of blades to be used

6. Choose between Vertical and Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines: Generally horizontal axis wind turbines are used in wind farms and windmills, the vertical axis ones which are less noisy are used for local or domestic purpose. Propeller Free personal wind turbines with vertical propulsion are bird friendly too.

Advantages of Wind Turbines

There are several advantages of Wind Mills like

1. Nil Pollution: This is clean and natural energy source so no air pollution as in oil, coal or gas based power generation plants.

2. Less Maintenance: Very less manpower or material is required to maintain the wind turbines.

3. Cheap Power Cost per Unit: Since the raw material of this energy source is free thus the resultant cost of energy produced is very cheap.

4. Unlimited Raw Material: Since Wind is free and is always available so one can be sure that the raw material of their wind turbine will not deplete like fossil fuel based power generation methods.

5. No Green House Gas Emissions: since the raw material to power a wind turbine is wind, there are nil green house gas emissions making it eco-friendly.

6. Can be installed anywhere: The wind turbines can be installed anywhere even on roof tops or local and domestic locations, making it the most easily accessible energy resource.

7. Plants are Economical: Installing a wind turbine is very economical if you are installing it for local or domestic purpose.

So if you want to cut down your power utility bill and contribute towards clean and healthier environment go ahead and install a wind turbine at your home. If you are an investor and decide to invest in farmed energy, you may get a regular source of income as the farmed energy is directly fed into the grid which is bought by power distribution companies.

Solar Training Workshops And The Importance of The Hands on Training You Get From Them

Author: Grant Brott

What exactly is renewable energy? Renewable energy is defined as energy generated from the Earth's resources that are naturally replenished and deemed inexhaustible. As man is progressively changing its direction from using fossil based fuels, resources such as wind, water tides, and geothermal heat for life sustaining power has made its mark with a steady integration into basic living. Among most renewable energy sources, many will say that solar energy tops the list. As it should! The sun comes at a scheduled time each and every day, every season, and every start of the day. Its predictability makes it valuable and empowers people who have had the proper solar training to harness the energy potential of the sun. With the tons of numerous resources on solar training accessible to everyone, a careful solar power enthusiast must devote time and effort to sort through and pick out a solar training provider that not only puts a premium in the correct and up-to-date trends in the industry but has its system and curriculum accredited by governing bodies that is the foremost authority in renewable solar energy and solar training : the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) and North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). One such training provider to have this connect is Sun Pirate. Since 1981, this solar training provider has been one of the many effective instruments in the promotion of solar energy and the movement to keep the Earth alive.

With the advancements of technology since 1981, namely the internet, solar training finally breaks borders in reaching and educating people to be skilled solar technicians. The field of renewable energy needs knowledgeable and skilled practitioners in the understanding, design and installation of solar energy systems. Without these types of technicians, solar energy would forever be in a struggling limbo. Sun Pirate offers online courses that give its focus on the fundamentals of installing systems that are of standard and code compliant. Topics such as design criteria, guidelines for installation and safety concerns, equipment maintenance of photovoltaic power systems and hot water heating systems are designed by subject matter experts from the NABCEP and in accordance with the IREC and the Institute of Sustainable Power Quality (ISPQ). This makes Sun Pirate and recognized and accredited Continuing Education Provider.

The two major online courses offered by Sun Pirate are the Photovoltaic System Design & Installation and the Fundamentals of Solar Hot Water Heating. The first course focuses on providing the fundamental knowledge of designing and installing a photovoltaic system and is designed for an individual desiring an entry level position in the industry. The next one is created for an individual who is identified as one who may sell, design and supervise the installation of a solar hot water heating system in both residential and commercial capacity of recognized standard. The course aims to provide fundamental technical knowledge on solar heating systems that can lead to advancements in design and installation practices. The objectives of both online solar training courses are for students to be able to recognize the different types of solar hot water heating or photovoltaic systems, properly design systems for different commercial and residential sizes, plan and install the system and components effectively, understand and implement the strict codes during installation including permits, warranties and customer service as well as legal procedures and considerations.

It is important to note that these online, distance courses are excellent for people who wish to learn at their own pace. Each course is mentor or instructor guided which has the students join and participate in a discussion thread to share ideas, discoveries and queries with others on a weekly basis. The Photovoltaic System Design & Installation course is composed of the 15 lessons and a final examination while the Solar Hot Water Heating System is composed of 10 plus a final examination. Course guidance and materials such as manuals, Photovoltaic Systems by Jim Dunlap, Solar Water Heating by Bob Ramlov and Benjamin Nusz plus the current Solar Energy Code are provided for each student.

Sun Pirate is a training provider with the vision to give as much access to people who wish to change their lifestyle for the betterment of the Earth. With these kinds of course available, more and more people will be able to harness an energy that will probably be around for how many generations. With all the information on renewable solar training, getting accreditation and recognition from the IREC and NABCEP is one way that Sun Pirate has placed its "X" on the solar training map.

Bulding a Wind Turbine

Author: John Grant

There are some projects that the average person just wouldn't think of trying and I bet on the top of that list for many would be building your very own wind turbine. Ok, did we lose you? Does this project sound a bit too daunting?

Well, it doesn't have to be. With a little planning and then sticking to that plan with drive and determination you will have your very own wind turbine ready for use in practically no time at all.

If you have decided that you want to learn how to make wind turbines, yet, you do not really know what to do and where you should start, then consider these guidelines. This will be a basic starting off point with which to get this project started.

There are four basic areas that you need to concentrate on in making wind turbines. These are the towers, the batteries, the turbines and the tail and body assembly. There isn't any reason for you to worry about the money you will spend in making wind turbines, since the cost will depend on the number of watt that you want for your turbine.

For you to get started, you need to secure your tools such as the wrenches, saw and the cordless drills. Also you need to make a detailed plan in building your wind turbine. Also you need to secure an area that would serve as your workplace. This room should give you enough space to move around.

It is necessary for you to order a DC motor. This will be your power turbine. The DC motor will serve as the heart of the wind turbine, so it is necessary to get one. Ordering this may take days before it is delivered at your home, so place the order ahead of time. The most difficult part of building a wind turbine is the process of matching blades to the power turbine properly and effectively. However, do not be threatened by this because it will not be very difficult if you properly outlined your plan. If you are aiming for more power production, then you may need to have larger blades and of course larger DC motor.

In making a 1000 watts wind turbine, your blades should be at least 4 feet long, thus the diameter will have a total of 8 feet all in all. This will catch more wind and will create more power. If you are making small machines, it is advisable to use a PVC pipes for the blades. While you are waiting for the DC motor that you have ordered, you can start building your blades it actually takes only one day to be able to complete the blades.

Making a wind turbine is quite challenging. The body of the win turbine can be made out of any durable material available. As soon as the DC motor arrives, you can begin assembling all the parts, put them together and build the win turbine. Isn't quite an interesting idea to produce free electricity?
